The Writers’ House guest rooms at Drottninggatan 88C in Stockholm are specifically meant for writers and translators from abroad (other guests accepted at the manager’s discretion, if a room is available). Some writers/translators come to work here for a few days, others are visiting publishers or libraries, or simply spending a few days in the capital going to theatres and museums… this is not a writers’ retreat but some of our guests (particularly translators from Swedish) do of course work here. Many Swedish writers and translators stay here too when visiting Stockholm.

Access to meeting room if needed during your permanence at the Writers’ House can be arranged with the help of the Swedish Writers’ Union in the same building.

Over the years, many literary translators from Swedish into English, Russian, German, French, Italian, etc have stayed here. Quite often, publishers or cultural institutions place their foreign guests here, but we have many guests who make their own arrangements and pay directly to the Guest Home (it costs regularly SEK 700:- per night for a single room or SEK 500:- per night if you are member of the Swedish Writer’ Union, The Writers Guild of Sweden or PEN Sweden).

We have four single rooms in a flat in the very centre of Stockholm. Sometimes we can offer a double room by special arrangement. The rooms are simply furnished with a standard bed, a little desk and an office chair. The guest rooms share a bathroom (containing a shower and a WC) and a separate WC. There is also a shared living room with a little balcony and a large kitchen with fridge, hotplates, microwave, etc. Guests on a tight budget can easily make their own food – there are several excellent bakeries very close too. Tea and coffee is available in the kitchen. Sheets and towels are provided. Rooms are cleaned after each stay, but there is no cleaning in the room during a short stay. There is wifi-internet. The entire flat is strictly non-smoking! The flat is on the second floor (46 steps and no lift!) The four single guest rooms look down upon the courtyard behind the Central Bath ( building – this is one of the most attractive garden courtyards in Stockholm. The guest rooms used to be in another part of the building, with the rooms facing the street. The new rooms all face the courtyard, and the premises are newly renovated. The building is owned by the Swedish Writers’ Union which has its offices next door and often itself has guests here.

This part of Drottninggatan is a pedestrian precinct which leads straight to the Old Town. The National Library, City Library and the major publishing houses and cultural institutions are all within easy walking distance. The railway/coach (cityterminalen) station is very close too.
